Comprehensive Review of Methodology

During the last decades a very large body of experience regarding safety assessment of geological repositories of radioactive waste has been generated, both in European countries and outside of Europe. This experience provides a firm basis for future steps in national development programmes. In parallel with development activities, a growing number of formal evaluation processes, including regulatory processes, have been and are being carried out, generating important guidance for future work. A significant part of these efforts has been realised under the auspices, and in the framework, of the programmes of international organisations.

The main objective of RTDC-1 is to assess the state of the art of the methodologies and approaches needed for the safety assessment of geological repositories, and to distil the lessons learned from the rich experience accumulated in their development and application. Altogether, 12 relevant topics will be examined in detail. The RTDC-1 will specifically address the following issues:

To carry out a comprehensive review of safety assessment methodologies and of the tools used in their implementation.
To identify any deficiencies in both the methods and the tools, and in the quality of data the former require.
To develop a better understanding of the methodologies, identifying where approaches and terminology can be harmonised across the European Union.

The first topics which are dealt with in the scope of the project include:

safety functions
definition and assessment of scenarios
safety indicators and performance/function indicators
uncertainty management and uncertainty analysis

The main outcome of the work that will be performed within RTDC-1 is to provide the inputs for a European handbook of the state of the art of safety assessment of geological repositories, based on a current and comprehensive overview of methodologies and experiences. An outline of this report will also be produced, with the purpose of communicating the project results to a larger audience of educated people not necessarily expert in the field.

This RTDC is led by ENRESA, Spain.
