Treatment of Uncertainty

The objective of RTDC-2 is to allow development of a common understanding of different approaches to the management of uncertainty in PA, and to provide guidance on, and examples of, good practice on how to treat different types of uncertainty in the context of the development of a post-closure safety case, both as a whole and in specific areas. Guidance on the development of work in RTDC-2 will come from an initial review of key drivers and methodologies for the management of uncertainty, to be conducted in RTDC-1.

RTDC-2 has two main development tasks that are due to:

research key drivers and methodologies for the management of uncertainty, addressing regulatory compliance, the communication of uncertainty, approaches to system PA, and techniques for sensitivity analysis.
test and develop the guidance from RTDC-1 by undertaking a series of exercises to provide examples of uncertainty management from different European programmes at different stages of development. The work is divided into tasks that consider the main types of uncertainties (scenario, model and process, parameter), the treatment of spatial variability, and the development of probabilistic safety assessment tools.
